Lucerne Fall Colors

What you'll do

This itinerary includes a few day trips from Lucerne to see fall colors. I've chosen a different mountain for each day, including a few options so you can choose the ones that make the most sense for your group. If you like all the options, you could spread them over multiple days.

Day 1

Engelberg is ideal destination to experience all that the Swiss alps have to offers. There are three main mountain areas that surround this village. I suggest choosing one of these areas for this day.

A. Titlis & Trübsee - If you want a Glacier experience, this combo is the right choice for you. You get both the high mountain views and the charm of alpine meadows down at the lake.

B. Brunni Engelberg - If you are traveling with children and need lots of fun activities, this is the best place for you. It has playgrounds, alpine slide, theme trails - all the fun stuff.

C. Fürenalp - If you want a quieter location, locals only, this mountain is the better choice. You can hike or just enjoy the view from the restaurant

Trübsee Lake

Easy hike around alpine lake

This easy loop around a stunning alpine lake makes for a great leisurely walk with fantastic mountain views. In October, the hills turn golden, giving a beautiful autumn vibe.

For the kids, there are six play stations along it, include trampolines, a huge playground, a big jump into an air pillow and pony rides. It's an obstacle free path, suitable for beginners, strollers, and wheelchairs.

Titlis Glacier Viewpoint

Glacier snow, ice cave & suspension bridge

Mt Titlis is a spectacular mountain viewpoint near Lucerne, , a popular tourist destination all year round. Since Titlis has a glacier, you can play in the snow and sled even in summer.

Starting in the picturesque town Engelberg, you ride a small gondola car halfway up the mountain. Then transfer to the world’s first revolving aerial cableway up to the Titlis glacier at 3020m.

At the top, you’ll find a large snowy plateau to explore, a long suspension bridge to cross, and ice tunnels to explore. There are also indoor restaurants with big panorama windows, so you can warm up and still enjoy the scenery.

Should you go?

We like to take our visitors here instead of the Jungfraujoch, because closer to Zurich and half the price (still expensive though) with mostly the same features.

It's an impressive mountain and very fun. But it's also very expensive and a popular tourist destination. If you don't like crowds and want a more authentic Swiss experience, better to choose something like Fürenalp, another mountain in the Engelberg area.

How to get there

Titlis gondola station - Gerschnistrasse 12, 6390 Engelberg. You can ride the train to Engelberg, then a short bus or walk to the cable car station.

A round trip ticket starts around CHF 96, depending on when you go. This outing is free with the Tell Pass. Discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass, SBB GA & Half-fare.

➡️ Buy tickets in advance to skip the line.

Planning your day

I suggest planning about 2-3 hours this outing. If you need more activities to fill out your day, we suggest stopping at the Trübsee middle station and do the easy walk around the lake, which has a theme trail and large playground.

There are restaurants at the top, but we prefer to eat at the Trübsee middle station because the kids can spill out to the playground.

Since this attraction is open year round, this is a great choice for early spring and late fall when trails may be closed due to snow.

Fürenalp hike

Mountain Hike to Waterfall

We love this gentle panorama hike near Engelberg that traverses the mountain, leading to a roaring waterfall. Then the trail follows the river down into the Engelberg valley. It’s so beautiful with many mountain peaks in view and varied terrain, from wide open fields to narrow rocky paths to forest to rivers.

The Fürenalp cable car stays open into mid November, making it a good choice for fall when other lifts close. One year, we had a spell of warm sunny weather the second week of November and had a great time on this trail.

Although it’s a bit long, it’s still a good choice for new hikers and kids because its either flat or downhill the whole time. If you want a harder hike, just hike it backwards, going uphill the whole time.

If you prefer not to hike, you can simply enjoy the views from the restaurant terrace, which has a nice playground next to it with a trampoline. No matter what you do at Fürenalp, I’m sure you’ll love it.

Restaurant

Mountain Restaurant Fürenalp

Pristine mountain dining experience

This restaurant is at the top of the Fürenalp cable car, no hike required to enjoy the spectacular views from its outdoor terrace. There's a nice playground next to the restaurant so the kids can be busy while you enjoy the views.
