4 Tage
4 days must-see spots at São Miguel
What you'll do
In my opinion, if you don’t plan on hiking or participating in activities like canyoning, dolphin and whale watching, etc., but simply want to explore the island, see all its beautiful views, and visit the main attractions, 4 days would be a more suitable timeframe for a quick tour of the island, allowing you not to miss its key highlights.
The second, third, and fourth days can be rearranged, but I recommend following the order I’ve created, as visiting these places in this sequence is, in my opinion, the best way to fully understand and experience the island. Of course, you should always consider weather conditions and check cloud cover in the areas you plan to visit using local webcams.
Day 1
On the first day, I suggest heading to the Lagoa do Fogo area. After checking into your hotel, visit the viewpoints around Lagoa do Fogo, and then you can either relax in the hot springs and explore a nearby parks and waterfalls. The itinerary assumes you’re staying in Ponta Delgada, but feel free to choose any hotel that suits your taste. In the evening, enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants in Ponta Delgada.
I intentionally made the first day shorter, as it assumes this is your arrival day on São Miguel. However, you can extend the options for the first day by checking out the spots marked on my map that are located nearby.

Besichtigung
Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa
Viewpoint with stunning views
Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa is one of the most impressive viewpoints on São Miguel Island, Azores. Located at an elevation of 947 meters, it provides panoramic views over Lagoa do Fogo, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Azores, along with both the northern and southern coastlines of the island. This spot is easy to access, as it’s located right along a regional road, and offers excellent photography opportunities due to its high elevation and sweeping views.
To make the most of your visit, it’s best to check the weather beforehand, as conditions can be unpredictable at this altitude. Dressing in warm layers is recommended, especially in the morning or late afternoon, as it can be cooler up there. Checking local webcams before heading out is also a good idea to avoid cloud cover, which can limit visibility.
The views from here are undeniably beautiful, but personally, I prefer the nearby Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo, which offers a slightly more interesting perspective over the lake and surrounding landscapes.
Please note that access to the viewpoint during the summer season, from May to September, is open to private vehicles, including rental cars, only until 9 AM and after 7 PM. From 9 AM to 7 PM, access is only possible by tour bus or with a private guide.

Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Caldeira Velha

Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre, located on São Miguel Island in the Azores, is a remarkable destination for nature enthusiasts. The center highlights the island’s volcanic origins, with an emphasis on the formation of the Fogo volcano. Here, visitors can explore exhibitions about the region’s biodiversity, geological history, and geothermal resources, offering a deep insight into the unique natural heritage of the Azores.
Surrounded by lush vegetation, the center also features four thermal pools, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. The naturally heated waters are rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, known for their therapeutic effects, which help with muscle relaxation, circulation, and overall well-being. However, to ensure safety, visitors should avoid drinking the water, refrain from swimming with open eyes, and follow any advised precautions, especially if pregnant or with health conditions.

Wasserfall
Cascata do Salto do Cabrito
Charming waterfall with catwalk view
Salto do Cabrito is a charming waterfall located on São Miguel Island in the Azores. With a height of approximately 40 meters, it may not be as grand as some other waterfalls in the area, but it offers a unique experience with a metal catwalk that allows you to walk on top of the waterfall and enjoy stunning views. The name “Salto do Cabrito,” meaning “jump of the goat,” is rooted in local legend, which tells of a playful goat that leapt into the waters below.
The historical significance of the waterfall is tied to nearby old dairy farms that relied on its waters for irrigation, highlighting the connection between the land and its agricultural past. The hike to the top is relatively easy and takes about 2 hours, passing by a dam and hot springs along the way.
Google Maps indicates that there is parking available at the top, where most visitors leave their cars. However, I recommend confident drivers consider descending the concrete road to the parking area near the waterfall. This option will allow you to avoid the exhausting uphill trek back to your vehicle.
