Muottas Muragl

Engadin Valley View

This is probably the most beautiful vantage point above the lakes of Upper Engadine. Sunsets from here are a sight to behold. With his keen eye for beautiful landscapes, and unique light conditions, Segantini discovered this special patch of the earth. Between the wide valley of the River Inn and the valley that leads to the Bernina Pass.

A funicular railway takes over the 700-meter climb from Punt Muragl up to the Muottas Muragl for all scenic lovers – accompanied in the upper section by sun collectors that cover the energy requirements of the mountain dwelling in an environmentally friendly way. In winter, Muottas Muragl is now a playground for sledgers, snowshoe hikers and connoisseurs.

Here you can hike into panoramic views in the literal sense: over to Alp Languard (Pontresina) or up to the Segantini hut or Lej Muragl.

Wanderung

Lej Muragl

Hidden beauty lake

The spectacular journey up to Muottas Muragl by funicular railway is a good indicator of the sort of panorama that awaits you. The views of the Engadin (lake) landscape and the mountain scenery are without doubt unique. The signposted hiking trail begins on the left, above the panoramic trail, with a gentle ascent. Along the trail, past flora and fauna and the many charms of this high-alpine landscape, there are excellent views of the rock glacier slowly inching its way like a lava flow towards the valley. A good hour's hiking sees you reach the delightful lake of Lej Muragl (2715 m), resplendent in its magnificent colours.

We found many cows curiously watching us when we hiked along the trail. Once you reach the lake you can continue towards Chamanna Segantini or also return the same way back down.

Segantini Hütte

The painters hut

When you are in Engadin it is worth to come for a visit to Giovanni Segantinis hut, where the painter resided and created many of his fabulous art pieces. The great painter Giovanni Segantini retired to the Schafberg Hut above Pontresina in September 1899 to complete his triptych of nature for the forthcoming World Exhibition in Paris. On 28 September 1899 the artist died unexpectedly in the Segantini Hut of peritonitis. The Alpine triptych "Becoming" "Being" and "Passing away" can be admired in the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.

The hut can be reached from Muottas Muragl station or from the Languard chairlift. Both hikes are moderate and absolutely panoramic.

At the hut you can simply enjoy the view and get some local delicacies

From Muottas Muragl: 3.4km, 1:25h, 389m ascent, 112m descent From Languard Chairlift: 4.5k, 2h, 495m ascent; 94 descent
