The Valais Experience

What you'll do

Day 1

Besichtigung

Furka Pass

The old scenic hotel place

The Furka Pass connects Andermatt in the canton of Uri with Gletsch in the canton of Valais and is part of the popular Three Passes journey over Furka, Grimsel and Susten. In summer, a ride on the nostalgic Furka steam train from Realp to Gletsch is an unforgettable experience. This abandoned hotel Belvedere is definitely worth a stop when you are on your roadtrip. It's nice to stop by and also visit the ice grotto from the Rhone Glacier. The place does get busy in summer and sunny weather. On such days I recommend you to pass by early in the morning or later evening. I visited also a couple of times in very moody weather and on such days you might be lucky to get some cool reflections in the ponds on the road.

Keep in mind to check the opening beforehand since the Furkapass is closed from late October to mid June.

Besichtigung

Rhône Glacier

Melting ice cave wonder

Nowhere else in Europe can you drive so close to a glacier as here. Easily accessed and always fascinating, the 100-metre long blue ice tunnel and ice chamber has been cut new into the Rhone glacier every year since around 1870. Cutting the ice cave takes about four weeks. The grotto is just short of 2300m above sea level on the Valais side, three km below the Furka pass. The entrance is approx. 180 metres from the Furka pass road and Hotel-Restaurant Belvédère.

I came in 2020 and it looked completely different than now. It is sad to see how fast the glacier is melting. Nonetheless, make yourself the tie and visit this insanely breathtaking place. It will not be the same in a few months or years.

Photopgraphy tips: make sure you find the more illuminated spots and come here when it's not dark. Then you'll just need to be a bit patient not to have people in your photos :)

Goms Bridge

The Insta Suspension bridge

This is one of the most easy accessible suspension bridges in Switzerland. You simply arrive by car and can park at the parking (it's on the main road between Fiesch and Bellwald.

The "Goms Bridge", built and opened in summer 2015, connects the two hiking areas of Bellwald and Ernen as well as the Rottenweg and the Gommer Höhenweg. At the same time, it provides Bellwald with a connection to the cantonal Gletsch-Lake Geneva cycle path and a year-round link to the Binntal Landscape Park.

The 280-meter-long and 1.40-meter-wide bridge is accessible year-round for hikers, wheelchair users and bicycles. In fact it is the 5th longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Switzerland

For those who only want to pay a short visit to the Goms Bridge, parking spaces are available in Fürgangen. For crossing the road we ask everyone to use the underpass.

PS: on sunny summer days it is very busy but if it's moody you might have the chance to be the only one like we were :)
